Tamron has announced the development of the 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 (Model A065), which is expected to be available in the second half of 2023. It is a fast-aperture telephoto zoom lens for the Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras.

An evolved version of the highly acclaimed first-generation model, the 70-180mm f/2.8 G2 incorporates several enhancements. It now has Tamron’s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism that allows the lens to maintain its manoeuvrability of class-leading compact size and weight whilst still shooting with greater stability.

The optical design has been updated and achieves high image quality across the entire zoom range. The MOD (Minimum Object Distance) has also been shortened at the wide end from its original 0.85m (33.5in) to 0.3m (11.8in), providing it with a distinct photographic expression that is unique to the 70-180mm f/2.8 G2.

In addition to all these improvements, Tamron’s renowned VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism has also been incorporated within the lens, thus enabling high-speed, high-precision auto-focusing while shooting both stills and videos. The lens supports the in-house Tamron Lens Utility and Tamron Lens Utility Mobile apps that can be used to customise functions based on various shooting styles.

The new lens’ practical design makes it more easily operable and scratch resistant. It is only 6.2” (156.5mm) long and weighs only 855g despite its VC image stabilisation, thus making it more manoeuvrable. It is built to be user friendly, with moisture resistant construction and fluorine coating.

The lens strikes a commendable balance between artistic flexibility and quality and physical practicality, thus providing the user with an enjoyable shooting experience.
